How green can direct mail be?
- Clean your data - it is estimated that over 10% of households move each year so by removing the goneaways you mail less.
- Use recycled envelopes or paper
- Reduce the amount of ink that you fill the page with - less ink is less damage.
- Target more precisely your target audience when buying data..
- Encourage the reciepient of your mailing to recycle it when finished
- If using polybags look to see if you can mail out in polythene that can be Recycled..

What response rate should I get from my mailing?
The acutal response rate you get from a mailing is dependant on numerous factors, some of these being
- Type of list you are writing to - is it a cold list ("bought in not owned by you") or is it a client list
- The type of offer you are making?
- The copy you are sending?
- How you are posting?
- When are you posting?
- If you are going to followup, and how?
For example on a cold mailing we would estimate response rates to go from 0%-3% for an initial mailing. This may then make you wonder if it is cost effective for you to mail but it all depends on the value of the product /service you are looking to sell?
For example an estate agent selling a house may only require 1 response from a mailing of 5000 to pay for his mailing! But on the other hand if you are selling a widget costing £19.99 you may require 100's of responses to break even.

What does downstream access mean?
Downstream Access is good for your business because....
- It saves you money - the downstream access price is usually cheaper than Royal Mail's comparative products
- It's a faster service - most downstream access providers get the post to Royal Mail and out to the door in 2/3 days
- It's more trackable - as post Downstream providers originated as couriers when the post leaves a mailling house each bag of post is tracked to the relevant postal depot - therefore if there is an issue with response or queries regarding non delivery it is easier to prove that the "cheque is in the post"
- You dont have to use the M logo - associated with bulk mailings which helps with the overall open rate.
